Frequently Asked Questions

There are no bad questions, just curious minds on the path to clarity!

1
.
What can I expect in my first session?

It’s totally understandable if you’re feeling nervous about your first session. After all, you’re talking about private struggles with someone you’ve never met before. Having a clear direction as we work together makes it easier for you to focus on your goals and minimizes the nervousness that will come up during the first session, and as you tackle your challenges. So, for the first one to two sessions we’ll talk about what’s coming up for you now that you’d like to improve and what you think is getting in the way of making changes to reach your goals. Then based on your goals we’ll talk about a treatment plan and take the next steps.

2
.
How do I know if therapy is right for me?

Everyone has times when they’re feeling overwhelmed, but if you’re at the point where it’s difficult to make and keep important commitments like go to work or meet friends, or take care of daily tasks like personal hygiene or meals, then you might consider getting some support.

3
.
Do you offer virtual sessions?

I offer only virtual sessions using a secure video conferencing service. Sessions are 50 minutes and focused on the challenges in your treatment plan.

4
.
How long does therapy usually take?

Generally six months to one year, depending on the intensity of the challenges you’re learning to manage and how often you incorporate what you’ve learned into your daily life (just a heads up, I expect you to do this every chance you get). I tend to think it’s not how long you’re in therapy, but the progress you make. Slow progress is still progress.

5
.
Is everything we discuss confidential?

Yes, to a point. Most of what you tell me will stay between us (so there are no surprises from well intentioned people). There are specific instances, however, where I’m legally required to report information you’ve told me like if you’re at imminent risk of suicide or homicide, or have told me that you’ve abused a minor or harmed an elder or dependent adult. This is to maintain the well being and safety of all. The details of this are discussed at the beginning of treatment and written down for you so you can refer to it at any time.
